SORROW
TURNED TO JOY!
John
16:21
21
A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as
soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for
joy that a man is born into the world.
This
reminder from Jesus
is set in the midst of His explanation that He must go to the cross. This would
cause indescribable grief for the disciples but their sorrow would soon turn to
unquenchable joy. There is a principle here, however, that transcends Jesus’
topic and presents us with a hope through many dark and troubling times.
Over
our church suffered a near collapse of our roof because of an unusually heavy
snow load. The insurance company condemned the sanctuary and then began a long
negotiation over whether and how the repairs would be made. It is now nineteen
months later and we are about to dedicate our newly renovated building.
In
my impatience,
I thought this day would never come and now that it has come I am amazed at
what I remember and what I do not. Most of the pain and discomfort is gone but
I can still remember the sweet sounds of our church singing in our temporary
meeting place. The room has a tall ceiling and made a wonderful venue for
choral singing. It was magnificent! I was also amazed at how patiently our
people endured and celebrated every step of the construction process.
Now
the joy of the completed project is like a new mother as she cradles her
baby for the first time. The pain and labor are over as she begins to count
fingers and toes. None can steal her joy!
The
child of God is never far from the Master’s sight and tender care. He may
allow travail, not because He wants us to suffer, but because He knows the joy
that suffering will produce.
Ps
30:5
5
weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.
Dear
Lord, help me to remember that life’s trials often produce great joy. AMEN
