THIS
GENERATION!
Prov
30:11-14
11
There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their
mother.
12
There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed
from their filthiness.
13
There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted
up.
14
There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as
knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.
I’ve
seen it and have barely restrained myself from intervention. You also have
seen insolent children disobeying, disrespecting and demanding. These belong to
a generation of four great evils.
1.
A generation of disrespect and dishonor!
The word “curseth” in verse 11 is also translated “to make light of.” There
needs to be no actually epithet flung toward the father although I have
overheard it from time to time. Those who curse the one who gave them life is
unworthy of the life received. They curse their father and do not “kneel
before” their mother. This is a horrible evil and I think God’s wrath is
aroused against those who curse their father. In fact we can point to at least
one verse that indicates a blessing for those who respect and honor their
parents.
Eph 6:1-3
6:1 Children, obey your parents in the
Lord: for this is right.
2 Honour thy father and mother; (which
is the first commandment with promise;)
3 That it may be well with thee, and
thou mayest live long on the earth.
2.
A generation of self righteous but unwashed!
Rev 3:17
17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and
increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art
wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
3.
A generation of vanity, pride and insolence!
O how lofty are their eyes! Extreme presumption is what is indicated here. This
is the generation that feels privileged, feels entitled to great benefits
without labor.
4.
A generation of greed and oppression!
Matt 23:14
14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence
make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
What a shameful way to describe the Pharisee! They eat up widows’ houses. What
meager goods the widow might own is taxed and taken to join the coin in the
coffers of the uncaring.
Into such a generation Jesus came the first time to die and to redeem and into
such a generation Jesus will come the second time to reclaim and to judge.
Dear
Lord, let me honor my parents – seek after your washing – let me be humble –
let me be generous. AMEN
