THE COIN TOSS!
Prov 16:33
33 The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the
Lord.
Ex 28:30
30 And thou shalt put in the breastplate of judgment the Urim and the
Thummim; and they shall be upon Aaron's heart, when he goeth in before the
LORD: and Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel upon his
heart before the LORD continually.
According to the first century Jewish historian Josephus,
the Urim was composed of two sardonyx stones, each one within a pouch in the
Breastplate worn by the High Priest. This breastplate is known as the breastplate
of judgment. Besides the Urim and Thumim, lots could be sticks with markings,
stones with symbols, etc., that were thrown into a small area and then the
result was interpreted. Our modern equivalent is the coin toss.
When a judgment can’t be made by the facts
of the matter, sometimes a coin toss is used. Heads says we go this way and
tails says we go that way! We pray while the coin is in the air for the Lord to
turn it so that it lands according to His best plan which usually mirrors
our own desires.
Sometimes even a coin toss isn’t enough. We need to hear a voice – even an inaudible voice – that will guide
us on our way. Fortunately for believers, we have been given the guidance of
the Holy Spirit in difficult matters. We listen carefully – even painfully. We
don’t want to make the wrong decision. We know that we have the added benefit
of God’s grace when we choose ignorantly.
Guidance and decision making is not for wimps! Many times, even after
careful consideration, we simply must act on the best information available to
while leaving the outcome to God.
Isa 30:21
21 And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way,
walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.
Dear Lord, today some of your children are facing daunting decisions.
Help them, Lord. Whisper guidance into their souls and lead them. AMEN
