WHEN ALL MEN SPEAK WELL OF YOU!
Luke 6:26
26 Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.
We all want to be well thought of. I think it is a result of mankind’s original sin. Essentially, it is a cousin of pride and ultimately it is an unrealistic expectation.
Jesus, as part of His sermon on the mount, contrasted those things that were “blessed” against those things that were “woes.” Like people today, many in that audience thought that happiness came from having great possessions, or holding an exalted position, or enjoying the pleasures and popularity that money can buy. Imagine how surprised they were when they heard Jesus describe happiness in terms just the opposite of what they expected! (Warren Wiersbe)
We should strive to make friends and even to influence others, but we will not be universally successful in that venture. Job learned that he would always have Satan as his accuser.
Adam Clarke commented: “These three verses are not found in the sermon, as recorded by Matthew. They seem to be spoken chiefly to the scribes and Pharisees, who, in order to be pleasing to all, spoke to everyone what he liked best.” I have a dear departed friend who used to say, “If you want to be popular, sell ice cream!”
Dear Lord, I know that my happiness does not depend on my circumstances but on my relationship with you. Thank you for the satisfaction that comes from knowing you. AMEN
