EVERY
IDLE WORD!
Matt
12:35-37
35
A
good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and
an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.
36
But
I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give
account thereof in the day of judgment.
37
For
by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
The phrase "idle word" in Matt
12:36 is translated from the Greek argos which
literally means “ inactive; unemployed; (by implication) lazy, useless:
barren, idle, or slow.” If God is going to judge our small talk, how much more
will He judge our deliberate words? It is by our conversation at unguarded
moments that we reveal our true character.
I was shocked at the words of
one of our political candidates caught in an unguarded moment. More shocking
yet is the transparent deeds of his opponent! We are truly in a mess.
Even more shocking is that the Son
of God, while dying, was able and willing to forgive the thoughts – words – and
deeds of a nearby thief. We only know this man as a thief. All his other words
and deeds are long forgotten. But it is the words of the Savior that still echo
in our hearts. “Today thou shalt be with me in Paradise.”
Ps
130:3
3
If
thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?
Ps
103:10
10
He
hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our
iniquities.
Dear
Lord, I am so glad that all my words and thoughts are not broadcast over a hot
microphone. I am grateful beyond words for your mercy. AMEN
