GOD DELIGHTS IN YOU!

GOD DELIGHTS IN YOU!

Prov 3:11-12
11 My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord ; neither be weary of his correction:
12 For whom the Lord  loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

Heb 12:6
6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

I observed a grandmother with an infant grandson the other day. The only way to describe the look on her face was delight. She delighted in this grandson. She took note of all his features from his tiny fingers to his little bald spot where the hair had been slept away in the crib. My wife says that the first thing a new mother does is to count fingers and toes. The eye can hardly get enough of the tiny life in her arms.

In the same way, God delights in us. This is in stark contrast to what we generally think when God is trying to teach us a lesson by chastening us. We see him as a stern judge with harsh and unbending rules that are impossible to keep but the opposite is actually true.

The word delight is set in the midst of correction. In fact it is the reason for correction. We are corrected because he delights in us. Interestingly, the Hebrew word for delight here is ratsah which carries with it the satisfying of a debt. God delighted in us so much that He sent His Son Jesus as the satisfaction for our debt. The debt is paid because He delights in us. The debt is paid so that He can continue delighting in us.

Thank you Lord, for delighting in me. Help me to feel your love even when you are in the process of chastening me. AMEN

THE SIN OF BEING SELF-WILLED!

THE SIN OF BEING SELF-WILLED!

Titus 1:7
7 For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;

2 Peter 2:9-10
9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:
10 But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.

          F. B. Meyer said: “Man’s fall, whatever else it may have been, resulted in a complete change in the centre of his being. He was made in the likeness of God, and God’s nature is absolutely selfless.” Man and woman were naked in the garden without shame and the reason was that they were not “self-conscious” of their nakedness. In fact one of the first questions asked of them was “who told you that you were naked?” They were not aware that their nakedness was a problem until the fall.

The conflict between Cain and Abel was a problem of self-centeredness. Cain, through the fall, had developed a pertinacious focus upon himself. A self-willed person is spiritually and emotionally immature. A newborn is totally focused upon himself. When he is hungry or wet he cries loudly without regard to the comfort or convenience of anyone else. Later he develops an awareness of mother and then of others. As he matures he learns to be courteous. Too many have failed to develop courtesy as a sign of maturity. They are self-willed.

Stubbornly and arrogantly insisting on one’s own way is specifically forbidden in bishops or pastors. How can one devote his life to the service of God and others while the centre of his focus is himself? Every character flaw listed in Titus 1:7 is a result of self-will. The anger, the brawling, the drunkenness and the love of money are all a result of a wrong focus. Self-willed is translated from the Greek authades which means “self-pleasing, arrogant and overbearing.” The man of God must not be guilty of this.

Perhaps an illustration is needed to open a window to our understanding. A cold wind was howling and a chilling rain was beating down when the telephone rang in the home of a doctor. The caller said that his wife needed urgent medical attention. The doctor was understanding. "I'll be glad to come, but my car is being repaired," he said. "Could you come and get me?" There was indignation at the other end of the phone as an angry voice sputtered, "What, in this weather?"

Matt 16:24
24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me , let him deny himself, [say no to his wishes and comforts] and take up his cross, and follow me.

Dear Lord, please change the focus of my heart. Help me to think first of you and then of others. AMEN

THE GLORY OF THE CROSS!

THE GLORY OF THE CROSS!

Gal 6:14-15
14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.
15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.

The Politics of the Cross: What is it about the cross that makes it such a lightening rod of controversy? We are beginning to see the desecration of Christian graves and crosses by Muslim zealots. Perhaps it was the sign of the crusades which still enrages the Muslim world but the Psalmist, I think, has a better explanation for the geo-political animosity to the cross.

Ps 2:1-4
2 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord , and against his anointed, saying,
3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.

The Person of the Cross: Paul knew the power of the cross. Jesus Christ is mentioned 45 times in the book of Galatians which means that one third of all the verses contain some mention of Christ. Christ had completely captivated Paul. The cross was an instrument of cruelty, horror and shame until Jesus hung thereon.

The Power of the Cross: To Paul, a learned Jewish rabbi, the teaching of the cross was foolish. The Jews expected Messiah to come and rule by restoring the kingdom but the idea of Messiah dying on the cross was completely foreign to them. In the death and resurrection of the cross the power of God is released upon the world, the flesh and the devil. The power of the cross is redemption and victory.

The Purpose of the Cross: The cross temporarily set aside the nation of Israel so that the gentiles might be grafted into the vine. Verse 15 says: For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision [Judaism] availeth anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. The cross established a new method of relationship with God. The cross levels the playing field because now there is no racial or national advantage. The cross ushered in the age of “whosoever.”

We may roll the thunders of eloquence, we may scatter the flowers of poetry, we may diffuse the light of science, we may enforce the precepts of morality, from the pulpit. But if we do not make Christ the great subject of our preaching, we have forgotten our errand and shall do no good. Satan trembles at nothing but the cross: at this he does tremble. And if we would destroy his power and extend that holy and benevolent kingdom, which is righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost, it must be by means of the cross."  -- J. A. James (as quoted by) -- Charles Haddon Spurgeon, The Quotable Spurgeon, (Wheaton: Harold Shaw Publishers, Inc, 1990)

Dear Lord, today let my focus be upon your cross. AMEN

WHEN HE CAME DOWN!

WHEN HE CAME DOWN!

Mark 6:46-48
46 And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray.
47 And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land.
48 And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them:
51 And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased:

Jesus had just come down from a time away from ministry. He had gone up into a mountain alone to spend time with His heavenly Father. If this was necessary for Jesus then certainly it is needed by we who are weaker. Recreation is aptly named if we put a dash between the “e” and the “c” making it read re-creation. I think, for believers, it needs to be more than just fun and games. It requires a time for reflection and spiritual renewal.

When He came down, Jesus found them “toiling in rowing.” His intention was to pass by and meet them on the other shore. I gather from this that it is not at all unusual that the disciples should be hard at work obeying Jesus’ commands. The wind is more often than not going to be contrary. We expect it to be otherwise.

If we continue reading in Mark, we see just how necessary it was for Jesus to refresh Himself because He immediately launched into a frenzy of ministry. People needed Him but first He needed some time with the Father.

During this time of vacationing when people vacate their jobs and duties for a period of rest or play, let’s not forget that our soul also needs refreshment which cannot be accomplished by a day at the beach. Spiritual refreshment requires a departure from the normal routine so that we may spend time with God. Don’t forget to include this in your vacation plans.

Dear Lord, thank you for being the model for my soul’s need for rest and refreshment. Help me to be sensitive to my need to occasionally climb the mountain and pray. AMEN

JUST TRUST!

JUST TRUST!

Ps 62:7-8
7 In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.
8 Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.

According to my concordance, the word “trust” is to be found in our English Bible 134 times! It is curious to me that of the SEVEN Bible Dictionaries in my library NONE of them are willing to tackle defining the word. What, then, does it mean to trust? We don’t know – and yet we do. Trust is the X in every equation! Now, math was never my strength but I know that X refers to the unknown. At the solving of the equation, X equals the answer sought. Generally, to trust in God is to cast our burden on the Lord, when it becomes too heavy for us.

Ps 55:22
22 Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.

Its companions are: A holy quietness, security and peacefulness of spirit, springing from a full persuasion of our safety. We know that He CAN sustain us because He is God. We know He WILL sustain us because of His nature. He is gracious and full of mercy. Trust is also to abandon our reliance on human reasoning!

Prov 3:5-6
5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Christianity is not occasional it is constant. “Trust in Him at ALL TIMES, ye people.” Do not use God like a spare tire or a good-luck charm. He should be the constant object of our trust. Through Him we can draw water from wells that are empty, find food in pantries that are bare and gain clarity when all around is only confusion.

Dear Lord! I know that if I am to trust you I must not lean upon my own understanding! Lord, help me to trust in you. AMEN

TRAIL BLAZING AND TEAM BUILDING!

TRAIL BLAZING AND TEAM BUILDING!

Rom 15:20
20 Yea, so have I strived to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build upon another man's foundation:

1 Cor 3:5-7
5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man?
6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.
7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.

Paul was a trailblazer and had a great desire to take the gospel to those places that had not yet heard. Our mind conjures up images of Paul, dressed in jungle shorts and safari helmet, hacking his way through the undergrowth of prevailing thought. He would need to be absolutely convinced of his theology and absolutely convincing in his presentation of it. This is the essence of mission work.

Paul was also a team member. He understood that his work dovetailed with the work of others to accomplish a purpose larger than any member of the team. He was trying to convince the carnal Corinthians that he was not in competition with. Neither was preaching a personalized gospel but rather a common truth. His was not a boutique belief but rather the faith once delivered to the saints. God was in charge and He would give the increase.

Dear Lord, give me both a trailblazing spirit and a team-building heart. AMEN

INFLUENCE!

INFLUENCE!

Ex 23:2
2 Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest judgment:

Ps 119:63
63 I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts.

2 Thess 3:6
6 Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.

Who is influencing you? Perhaps you don’t think about that very much but the truth is that your companions are affecting your thoughts and actions. Imperceptibly, you begin to own their opinions and assume their habits. Why do you think God said that He is the Potter and we are clay? He desires to mold us in a desirable and purposeful vessel.

Whom are you influencing? Someone, perhaps more people than you can imagine, are watching you and copying your opinions and actions. Are they wholesome attitudes? Are they godly practices? If you casually dismiss the thought then you should reconsider and be more intentional.

Following God cures both concerns! If I am following God closely then I will gain discernment enough to abandon ungodly or unhealthy influences. Because I follow God, those following me will be traveling in the right direction. God, then, is the answer.

Dear Lord, sometimes I have to abandon my own thoughts and desires so that I can follow you instead. In that case I have become my own evil influence. Let me be a companion of Thy Word and Thy Holy Spirit. AMEN

CLEARING UP THE CONFUSION!

CLEARING UP THE CONFUSION!

1 Cor 14:33
33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

This declaration by Paul is set like a gem in the midst of his instruction regarding the use of the gift of tongues. On the day of Pentecost God gave the church a wonderful tool with which to reach the world. He gave them the ability to communicate to foreigners in their own language. What fun it must have been to be able to rattle off a few phrases you had never previously learned! In fact it was probably the “fun” aspect of tongues that led to the confusion in the Corinthian church. Everyone was babbling at the same time. Nobody understood anybody. This led to many other unwanted results.

In Genesis chapter 11 Nimrod had decided to build a tower so tall it would reach into heaven itself. After all, how high could heaven be? God grew weary with this and said to himself: “let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.” (Gen 11:7-8) In this particular case, God actually was the author of their confusion.

God knew that once communication breaks down, relationships are over, and all cooperative projects fail. It is very important that we understand one another. It is important that we agree on the definition of certain terms and labels. Our current struggle to reconcile Christianity with rapidly changing culture may be little more than two passionate men arguing in different languages. They do not fully understand the points about which they disagree and often do not realize they have actually reached an agreement! Throwing up their hands, both shout in their own language: “It’s all Greek to me!”

The church is a community of believers who have joined together with a common understanding for a common purpose. It’s not perfect! We still struggle to understand one another but there is a beauty in this community that the world does not have. There is a kinship that is born of the Spirit. It is counter-cultural and cross-cultural in nature. It defies the differences that often separate us. The Spirit bonds us together. We are brethren.

1 Cor 1:10
10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

Dear Lord, let me be joined together with my brothers and sisters in Christ. May we think and speak the same thing that there be no divisions among us. AMEN

CALLED, NOT RECRUITED!

CALLED, NOT RECRUITED!

1 Cor 2:12-14
12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

John 4:24
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

We have reduced modern religion to a system more suited to a degree in Business Administration than in Theology. Fewer and fewer of our new ministers are respondents to a call from God and more and more of them have been simply recruited to a career. No such example can ever be found in the Bible. True, the Old Testament records that there were schools for prophets but it is clear that these individuals had a peculiar call and claim upon their lives by God. The result is that churches are increasingly being operated by religious CEO’s who are constantly running to one conference or another to learn the most popular way to attract customers.

Paul explained to the Corinthians that his ministry among them was not based upon human wisdom taught and learned in some educational climate. No, his religious education was much more electric than that which might be received in some musty classroom. Paul was blasted from his saddle on the road to Damascus by a light so bright he was blinded for days. Moses ended his days as a shepherd because of a burning bush which called him by name. If you say “that is incredible” then you have just proven my point.

If we can attract a crowd of worshippers to a temple built with a template, if we can lure them to participate in a program, and if we can elicit a predetermined response from them, then where is God and why do we need Him? Jesus said in John 6:44, “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him.” The Greek word for “draw” is heikou and means “to drag!”

If you ask the average church member why they chose their particular church, they will respond with a list of reasons. They came because of the beauty of the buildings or the friendliness of the people or the convenience of the programs for their children. Not many will say, “I was dragged here kicking and screaming!” To put it more gently, “It seems some invisible force led me here.” Such is the supernatural aspect of relationship with the Redeemer. He doesn’t just light the path I choose, He chooses the path.

Religious ambition must give way to the will of the Master. Conferences on church growth must yield to consultation with the Christ. Programs must yield to prayer. The natural must yield to the supernatural.

Dear Lord, please lead me along the path you have chosen for me. Give me the necessary supplies needed for today. Let me be an instrument in your hand. Let me sense the supernatural. AMEN

SWEET HOUR OF PRAYER!

SWEET HOUR OF PRAYER!

Gen 3:8
8 And they heard the voice of the Lord  God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord  God amongst the trees of the garden.

Matt 26:38-40
38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.
39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?

Whether hiding or sleeping, man finds too many opportunities to withdraw from contact with an intensely holy God. Adam hid from God’s companionship in the evening’s refreshing coolness. Peter slept through Jesus’ hour of intense grief. Is an hour too much to ask?

Oh! I have rediscovered that early hour spent listening to God’s word and then allowing my eyes to be washed with tears as I listen to sweet worship. Asking nothing, I simply allow God’s sweet Holy Spirit to wash over me. Sweet, sweet hour of prayer! This is worship on a personal level.

Sweet hour of prayer!
Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
That calls me from a world of care,
And bids me at my Father’s throne
Make all my wants and wishes known.
In seasons of distress and grief,
My soul has often found relief,
And oft escaped the tempter’s snare,
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!
William W. Walford, 1845

Thank you Jesus for that wonderful hour so early in the morning where I receive my washing. AMEN

WITH TEARS!

WITH TEARS!

Luke 7:41-48
41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.
42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?
43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.
44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.
45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.
46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.
47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.
48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.

Jesus had been invited into the house of Simon (not Simon Peter but Simon the Pharisee) not as a member of the family nor as an equal but as a guest. He was not given the most common of courtesies such as a basin of water to wash away the muck of the streets. He was not given even a ceremonial kiss on the cheek which was common in greetings. It was clear that Simon was “lording it over” Jesus and had Him in his home only because He was currently very popular because of all the miracles. It was all about Simon!

“A woman, which was a sinner” is all we know about the lady who knelt at Jesus’ feet. I suspect she came into the house without an invitation only as a follower of Jesus. Because she had no seat nor status she knelt on the floor. Overcome with the emotion of remorse and gratitude she began to kiss the feet of her Forgiver. Tears flowed in such volume that she was able to provide the courtesy not afforded by Simon who looked on with disgust. Because there was no towel she dried Jesus’ feet with the long locks of her hair. It was all she could do for One who had done so much for her.

How we treat Jesus is an indication of how we see ourselves and Jesus said as much in his address to Simon. While Jesus restrained Himself and spoke like a gentleman, yet Simon knew he had been “told off” in the most embarrassing manner by being compared to this broken and sinful woman. Simon discounted his own sins, which were also many, so he sat as lord in his own house with a condescending demeanor. He felt he needed no forgiveness – and received none. He heard Jesus say to this woman “thy sins are forgiven!”

Every day I have to check to see if I have invited Jesus into my life as a resource to be used and manipulated or whether I have knelt before Him as a Lord worthy of my service. Do I see Him as disposable or do I put myself at His disposal because He is essential? It is a daily exercise that I recommend for you as well.

Dear Lord, I easily relate to that sinful woman and her tears. Often I melt before you in a pool of tears and today I do so again. Holy – Holy are you Lord God Almighty! Worthy is the Lamb! AMEN

I PROMISE!

I PROMISE!

Rom 4:18-22
18 [Abraham] Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations; according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.
19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb:
20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.

2 Peter 1:2-4
2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

God delayed keeping His promise of a son to Abraham until his natural physical ability was finished. Abraham was ninety nine years old and Sarah was eighty nine. It was unthinkable to expect them to produce a child. All that remained was the promise of God!

A promise is only as good as the One making it! We have been disappointed when others have made promises that they would not or could not keep. It may be that circumstances made it impossible to keep those promises but they were broken. We have disappointed others because we have made promises that we were not able to keep. Time ran out, resources evaporated or strength failed and so we could not keep our promise. But God is not like us. He is not restricted by time. His resources are limitless and His strength can’t be calculated.

Heb 11:11
11 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.

Dear Lord, let me continue to trust in your promises even when the prospects look bleak. AMEN

JESUS’ PRAYER!

JESUS’ PRAYER!

John 17:9
9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.
15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.

Jesus specifically did not pray for the world. He never expected the world to be an agreeable place for believers. We are not of the world. Literally the Greek is ek tou kosmou ouk which reads “of the world, not!” It means that believers have another point of origin and another destination. Our birth into this world was physical but our new birth makes us citizens of heaven and makes us aliens here.

Our hope is that we might have some rest from moral decline but Jesus does not expect any great moral resurgence. Jesus did not pray for the destruction of “the evil” but that we might be kept from it. The word poneros means “that which is hurtful” and the definite article “the” makes it personal. Jesus prayed that believers would be protected from the one who would cause us hurt. We should not be surprised when there is hurt all around us.

2 Tim 3:13
13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

Jesus prayed for our “sanctification” which in the Greek hagiazo means “to make holy.” This is done through the Word of truth. The more a believer associates with the Bible the less he will be welcomed in the world. We can expect the world to be a hostile place, and increasingly so, if we draw closer to the Lord. However, we will not be made safer by abandoning God and embracing the world. The world will not return our embrace but knows, better than we, that we are aliens. The word “keep” in verse 15 indicates a garrison of soldiers posted to keep watch. Ah, that is comforting!

If you are waiting at the gate for the departure of your plane you will watch and listen for announcements and signals that you need to board. I have consistently watched men and women clog the entry with documents in hand. I have never seen them wait their turn but they stand in anxious anticipation until their section is called. We also need to be ready to board.

Heb 10:23-25
23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)
24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Dear Lord, I can sense a stirring at the gate of departure. As your coming draws nearer let me draw closer to you. AMEN

RELIGION ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH!

RELIGION ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH!

Matt 25:1-10
25:1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.
2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.
3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:
4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.
6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.
7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.
8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.
9 But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.
10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.

A Parable is a simple story told to illustrate a moral truth. An analogy is a likeness in one or more ways between things otherwise unlike. (Merriam-Webster) Parables and analogies are problematic because they hint at the problem without thoroughly explaining it. In the parable of the ten virgins, five were wise and five were foolish. All ten are presented as being the same except for one important detail. Five had brought oil for their lamps and five did not.

The lamps represent religion and though they be ornate and beautiful in their form they are useless as guides without the oil of the Holy Spirit. Religion may be carefully attended to which is illustrated by the fact that all ten “trimmed their lamps,” but there was no power in half of them. When “tried by fire” half of the lamps failed without oil.

There is a danger of mistaking religious formalities for true faith. There is a danger of mistaking human emotion for true faith. I’m afraid that some of our modern worship methodology promotes the possibility of a counterfeit religion. Like the Pharisees of old, we wear the robes and carefully follow the minutia of rules and regulations but have no heart. We stand singing with hands raised to heaven swaying to the music but there is no oil in our lamps. When all is said and done the oil is essential.

The lamp alone does not point out the stumbling places along the way. It does not reveal the blemishes that need attention. Only when the lamp of religion is lit with the oil can we see clearly. To put it plainly, religion alone does nothing to transform the life and guide the way. Many are stumbling in the darkness while carrying beautiful lamps unlit.

Ezek 33:30-32
30 Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the LORD.
31 And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.
32 And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not.

Dear Lord, may the oil of thy Holy Spirit be strong within us and upon us today that we might have light. AMEN

HE INCREASETH STRENGTH!

HE INCREASETH STRENGTH!

Isa 40:28-31
28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord , the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.
29 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.
30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:
31 But they that wait upon the Lord  shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

It is Monday and I imagine the majority of people ready to begin another week. For most, Mondays are the end of a weekend of rest and recreation. Even if they are not anxious to begin the week of labor, they are at least rested for it. They have been refreshed and they are ready for it.

It’s different for me! Monday is my Sabbath day. Having emptied myself of counsel, exhortation and encouragement, I often find myself like an empty vessel ready to be filled again. I am a fan of Mondays.

The inexhaustible God does not faint! God never gets droopy or becomes resentful of those who need Him. I am not God! Sometimes it is best for me to steal away from people and recharge so that my light does not grow dim in times of darkness. Even Jesus displayed human weariness and often removed himself from people to refresh Himself with a time of prayer and fellowship with His Father. That same benefit is available to us.

Isa 41:10
10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

Dear Lord, thank you for your strength when I am weak. I know that I can always count on you. When I think I can’t you whisper in my ear that together “we can!” AMEN

IF I KNEW!

IF I KNEW!

Matt 25:13
13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

Evil times always suggest that Jesus is coming soon! Our own governmental, moral, and spiritual melt-down certainly suggests that it would be an opportune time for Jesus to return but history has had other very evil times.

Consider the thought patterns of the late 1930’s through about 1946. The whole world was embroiled in WWII. Consider the speculation as Hitler exterminated six million Jews and ravaged most of Europe. Consider the prayers in London during the blitz or in Dresden during their fire storm. Wonder at the power of not one but two atomic bombs! Surely some thought it was the end of the world.

Now we are seeing signs and wonders in the heavens. The convergence of planets recreating what is thought to be the Bethlehem star along with a series of “blood moons” that conveniently line up with Jewish feast days both chill us and thrill us. But we do not know the day nor the hour of His coming. What if I knew?

I would get saved without delay! I would truly surrender myself to the Lord and would receive His grace and pardon. I would stop trying to cheat the reaper with a few more moments of the sinful life only to hope for a final, half hearted, death bed repentance. I would get saved now!

I would practice my faith sincerely! If I were already saved, I would begin immediately to practice my faith as if I were already in heaven. If this life is only one tick of the clock and heaven is an eternity, I would prepare myself for life in that eternal realm. I would make godly choices and assume heavenly attitudes. I would make myself ready.

I would convince my family and friends. I would be as sweetly persuasive as I possibly could be. I would plead with them, pray for them, and weep over them until they turned to the Lord. I would quit playing games and consider that trusting Jesus is the most important decision they could make.

I would worship in church today. What if Jesus came today and only to find me absent from worship because I had chosen some other diversion or entertainment. Yes, I would worship.

Luke 21:36
36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

Dear Lord, help me to consider how soon I shall see you and to prepare myself for that meeting. AMEN

CHURCH AND STATE!

CHURCH AND STATE!

Rom 13:1
13 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

Acts 5:29
29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

Whenever the government feels threatened by the Church it revives the old and worn issue of “separation of church and state.” This issue is not and never was part of the Constitution of the United States nor is it outlined in any other document. It was mentioned in a letter from by Thomas Jefferson expressing an understanding of the intent and function of the Establishment Clause and Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Since the First Amendment clearly places the restrictions solely on the state, some argue a more correct phrase would be the "separation of state FROM church". Either way, the "separation" phrase has since been repeatedly used by the Supreme Court of the United States in matters that all too often harm the churches.

The tension between Romans 13 and Acts 5 above guides the response of the church to the mandates of government. In Romans it is explained that believers have a moral – even spiritual – obligation to position themselves under the authority of established government. Keep in mind that the Bible was not written for Americans only but also those in totalitarian lands. Yet, peace and order are entrusted to government.

The disconnect comes when the government clearly decrees laws that are in disharmony with the teachings of Scripture. When government declares a thing to be right when it is clearly wrong, not only by doctrine but natural laws, we must, as Peter said, “obey God rather than men.” It is not our intention to be disobedient citizens but it is our duty to be obedient to God. It is government that makes us lawbreakers – not God.

The Church as a spiritual body has nothing to do with the state. It continues its own course, neither intruding into the sphere of the state nor refusing to aid the state, but ever rejecting an alliance with the state. Rom 12:18
18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

Dear Lord, help us to be productive citizens in obedience to Romans 13 but help us to have the courage to join with Peter in Acts 5 whenever it becomes necessary to do so. AMEN
