BETWEEN
HERE AND THERE!
Gen
28:10-17
10
And Jacob went out from Beer-sheba, and went toward Haran.
11
And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the
sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows,
and lay down in that place to sleep.
12
And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the
top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God
ascending and descending on it.
13
And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham
thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I
give it, and to thy seed;
14
And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to
the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and
in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
15
And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places
whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will
not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.
16
And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this
place; and I knew it not.
17
And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but
the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.
A
preacher’s wife once told the story about her mother’s apparent vision of an
angel.
I know what you are thinking, but these are not people given to excessive
spiritual excitement! Anyway, her mother had a heart attack and was in the
hospital. In the morning the mother said: “There was a male nurse, dressed in
white scrubs, who came into the room last night and said that I could
come on over If I liked. He said that it was OK and that I could come
if I wanted to.” The daughter told her mother that she was there the whole time
and that nobody came into the room. In fact there was no male nurse on
duty and that all the nursing staff was wearing scrubs with colors and
patterns.
Could
this lady’s mother have seen an angel? Was her vision simply a result of her
trauma or the drugs to combat it? Visions such as this always reveal
unbelievers as well as believers. None can definitely win the arguments that
ensue but the mystery brings up an important question for me. How
thin is the veil between here and there?
Would
we live differently if we could see the angels ascending and
descending on their invisible stairs? Would we give deeper thought to our
behavior or our choices if we could see the angels looking in on our world?
Heb
13:2
2
Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained
angels unawares.
Dear
Lord, thank you for the occasional proof that the curtain is thin between here
and there. AMEN.
