A DAY IN THY
COURTS
Reading: Psalm 84
Ps 84:10
10 For a day in thy
courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of
my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.
Unless you have
experienced painful circumstances which kept you from church, it is unlikely
that Psalm 84 will impact you quite like it did King David. Chased from brook
to bush by the insane Saul, David and his band of men slept under a cover of
stars and dew. The place of worship, which others so casually abandon, became
most urgent and essential.
This song
was accompanied by a “Gittith” which is a Gittite harp. Even now we incorporate
the “git” in the word guitar. It is simple and portable and in skilled hands
can provide lovely music. This, along with spear and shield, David carried with
him from place to place. With it he poured out his soul among the sheep and now
in the presence of his men.
Better than a thousand days
is just one day in God’s appointed place of worship! If one would do the math,
this is about three years of dwelling in tents. David felt an intense hunger
for worship and fellowship. He could satisfy this with nothing else. He is
jealous of the doorkeeper who listens and worships at the portal.
Today is Sunday.
Do you long for the days of worship?
Ps 27:4-5
4 One thing have I
desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of
the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to
inquire in his temple.
5 For in the time of
trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall
he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.
Lord, like David, I long
for worship. AMEN
