EAGER FOR AUTUMN
Gen 8:21-22
21 And the LORD
smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse
the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil
from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I
have done.
22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat,
and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.
God believes in
climate change! It is one of His promises. As the occupants of the Ark were
disembarking God declared that there would be a rhythm to the climate. The
weather would be constantly changing.
Here in Texas, we
are eager for Autumn. Weeks of one hundred plus temperatures makes us gaze longingly at
pictures of amber leaves and misty mornings on some farm porch with steam rising
from our coffee cup. We are more than ready for some of that.
I remember the day that
heavy snow cancelled classes at Baptist Bible College in Missouri. Freed from
classes, future pastors and missionaries assembled in the commons area behind
the administration building for a snowball fight. Midwestern kids seemed
properly clothed, but California kids wore jackets and socks for gloves. Pent
up frustration from studying Ecclesiastes made the battle fierce and without
order. We loved climate change!
God’s promise has
never been cancelled. Soon, but perhaps not soon enough, we will see the weather cool.
Farming will slow and the season of equipment maintenance will begin. Pinch-faced
farmers will gather in the early morning at some café for biscuits, gravy, and
sausage. Each wearing their bibs and ball caps. Oh, yes, I’m glad God keeps his
promises. Aren’t you?
James 5:7
7 Be patient
therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman [farmer] waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long
patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. KJV
Thank you, Lord, for the sure promise and rhythm of change. AMEN
