NO POWER BUT OF GOD!
Rom
13:1
13 Let every soul be subject unto
the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained
of God.
These words must have echoed in the mind and soul of America’s founding
fathers. Yet the circumstances of their citizenship began to look more and more
like slavery. Their property was not secure because England could billet
soldiers in private homes without the owner’s permission. Taxation was such a
burden that it frustrated ambition. It became more profitable to toss their tea
into the sea than to pay the tax. There was no avenue for grievance.
“When in the
Course of human events it becomes
necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected
them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and
equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a
decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the
causes which impel them to the separation.”
It has never
been easy to balance “subjection” to
governmental powers with “submission” to the will of God, but here we are
again. Life – of the unborn, liberty – of our citizens, and the pursuit of
happiness through religious liberty and moral purity are once again being
eroded from beneath our feet. I wonder if we have the courage to break the
shackles again.
For now, at
least, we are urged to pray “For kings,
and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life
in all godliness and honesty.” (1 Timothy 2:2)
Dear God of battles, tyranny once
again awakens and we are caught between subjection and submission. Let us pray
without ceasing but let us bear our arm if necessary. AMEN
