MOTHERS
BELIEVE IN YOU!
John
2:1-5
2
And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the
mother of Jesus was there:
2
And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.
3
And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto
him, They have no wine.
4
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet
come.
5
His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith
unto you, do it.
This
is the first recorded miracle of Jesus but not the first miracle with which He
was associated. The first miracle was his own birth and, of course, Jesus’
mother was very much involved in that one as well. Now she displays her
confidence in her son’s abilities by simply saying “they have no wine.” She
does not tell Jesus what to do; she simply presented to him the problem. She
was confident that her son would know what to do.
Mary
was most likely responsible for securing invitations to the wedding party for
Jesus and his disciples. These were elaborate affairs and attendance was by
invitation only. Some have speculated that Mary may have been in charge of
refreshments.
Jesus
was not being rude to his mother when he said: “Woman, what have I to do
with thee?” The word translated “woman” is gune and has a tender
connotation. It means “dear woman!” Jesus questioned why she was involving him
in this situation. Jesus was actually calming her fears and anxiety. The
meaning seems to be: “At the proper time I will intervene and produce a
supply.”
Mary
believed in Jesus’ ability. She believed in his sense of timing. She was
willing to release control of the situation to him. Mothers care for sons
until, at some time in their maturity, the sons begin caring for the mother.
Mothers believe in us and, after awhile, learn to trust us. Mary’s advice is
classic motherhood as well as great spiritual advice. “Whatsoever he saith unto
thee, do it.”
Today
is Mothers’ Day!
Of all the things for which to be thankful, remember that Mothers believe in
us!
Dear
Lord, I can’t hug my mother today. Would you give her a hug for me? AMEN
