TWO KINGS

Isa 6:1  In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.

Isa 6:2  Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.

Isa 6:3  And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

The year, in my opinion, was mentioned not only to mark the particular time but to allow us to view Isaiah’s grief. The name Uzziah means “the strength of Jah” or the strength of Jehovah. Alexander MacLaren explains that “ Uzziah had reigned for fifty-two years, during the greater part of which he and his people had been brilliantly prosperous. Victorious in war, he was also successful in the arts of peaceful industry. The later years of his life were clouded, but on the whole the reign had been a time of great well-being.” MacLaren continues by saying, “ His son and successor was a young man of five-and-twenty; and when he came to the throne ominous war-clouds were gathering in the North, and threatening to drift to Judah. No wonder that the prophet, like other thoughtful patriots, was asking himself what was to come in these anxious days.”

While Isaiah was pondering an empty throne filled by an inexperienced youth, God revealed Himself as the reigning King of Kings. He was high and lifted up above all that He controlled. His train completely filled the Temple. Winged Seraphs, copper in color, declared that the Lord was Holy, Holy, and Holy.

In times of grief and sorrow, God often provides a momentary partial view of Himself. This view highlights our own deficiencies and His wonderous strength. If the throne was emptied of Uzziah, the strength of Jehovah, then certainly Jehovah Himself could more than adequately fill the emptiness.

Perhaps you are discouraged today and have suffered loss. You may anticipate a momentary glimpse of glory. Isaiah’s sin was first revealed, then cleansed, and then he was commissioned. God first cleans the vessel and then fills it. God can do the same for you.

Lord, we are beginning to see your choice servants pass into glory. They have left an enormous emptiness. Please come and fill all our emptiness. AMEN
