THERE
IS A FOUNTAIN
John 19:33
34 But
one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
Matt 27:54
54 Now
when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the
earthquake, and those things that were done, they
feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.
There is a fountain filled with blood.
William Cowper (1731-1800). This hymn was first published in Richard Conyers’s
Collection of Psalms and Hymns (1772).
I find it interesting that
the date this hymn was published was 1772. Interesting, because this was one of
the hymns of our nation’s founding fathers. I imagine Washington and Jefferson
standing in austere surroundings singing these words, perhaps with tears, and remembering
the spear thrust into their Saviour’s side. Forthwith there came out blood and
water. Forthwith there also came out a new nation, conceived in liberty. Political
liberty was founded upon religious liberty and can continue only so long as
religious liberty survives.
There
is a fountain filled with blood,
Drawn
from Immanuel’s veins,
And
sinners plunged beneath that flood
Lose
all their guilty stains:
Lose
all their guilty stains,
Lose
all their guilty stains;
And
sinners plunged beneath that flood
Lose
all their guilty stains.
The
dying thief rejoiced to see
That
fountain in His day;
And
there have I, though vile as he,
Washed
all my sins away:
Washed
all my sins away,
Washed
all my sins away;
And
there have I, though vile as he,
Washed
all my sins away.
Suffering Saviour, let our conclusion be the same as the centurion.
Truly, you are the Son of God. AMEN
