UNDER HIS WINGS
Ruth 2:12
12 The LORD
recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel,
under whose wings thou art come to trust.
Ruth’s odyssey now finds her
picking up that which had been dropped by the harvesters in the field of Boaz,
her near kinsman. None of this she had known when she went out to earn daily
bread for herself and Naomi, her mother-in-law. It is a classic story of trust.
I made the mistake of clicking on
the news before launching today’s devotional and was instantly
amazed at how our godless culture can politicize a swath of tornados. The
slight-of-hand scientists would have us believe that cyclones were newly
manufactured by carbon emissions from the family car. We are to forget that Job’s
family was swept away by a cyclone and that Paul’s ship was broken up by a
hurricane. Echoes of “pay no attention to the man behind the curtain”
ring in our ears as our little dog yaps at the heels of the Wizard. The naked
truth wraps itself in the rags of propaganda and we, like lemmings, jump the
cliff.
Now back to Ruth – and truth. Boaz praises
what Ruth has discounted. He reminds her of her courageous decision, her adventurous
journey, and her steadfast devotion to her new family, nation, and God. She
seeks no welfare to resolve her condition. She does what she can and trusts God
to do what she can’t.
The idea presented in the word “trust”
is “to flee for refuge.” Boaz recognized it immediately even as he recognized
that God had selected him to be a major player in this drama, but even he could
not know what God had in store for both of them. Ultimately, he and Ruth would
be the great-grandparents of King David. Jesus, Messiah, King-of-Kings would be
born of their heirs.
Daniel S. Warner
wrote:
I will trust Thee,
O my Father,
For Thy love shall
never fail;
In Thy arms I rest
forever,
Safe within the
second veil.
Thee I trust for
every blessing,
All I need is in
Thy will;
On Thy promise
calmly resting,
Thou dost every
want fulfill.
Lord, today let me
abandon the news that isn’t and lay hold on the news that is. AMEN
