OF MICE AND MEN!

Prov 16:9
9 A man's heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps.

"To a Mouse, on Turning Her Up in Her Nest With the Plough, November, 1785" is a Scots-language poem written by Robert Burns in 1785. According to legend, Burns was ploughing in the fields and accidentally destroyed a mouse's nest, which it needed to survive the winter. In fact, Burns’ brother claimed that the poet composed the poem while still holding his plough.

You saw the fields laid bare and empty,
And weary winter coming fast,
And cozy here, beneath the blast,
You thought to dwell,
Till crash! The cruel plough passed
Out through your cell.

But Mouse, you are not alone,
In proving foresight may be vain:
The best laid schemes of mice and men
Go often askew,
And leave us nothing but grief and pain,
For promised joy!

Still you are blessed, compared with me!
The present only touches you:
But oh! I backward cast my eye,
On prospects dreary!
And forward, though I cannot see,
I guess and fear!

Burns ends his poem with doubts and fear but the Christian knows that what the plough may uncover a loving God will re-cover! The best laid plans of mice and men may sometimes go awry but the plans of the Almighty are written in the sky!

Ps 37:23
23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.

Lord, if I knew you had a plan for this week I wouldn’t have worked so very hard on my own. Let me cooperate with your superior plan. AMEN

VOLUNTEERS, GOD WON’T FORGET!

VOLUNTEERS, GOD WON’T FORGET!

Heb 6:10
10 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.

Matt 10:39-42
39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.
40 He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
41 He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.
42 And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

Even in this narcissistic climate, volunteers still make the church of God function and the world a better place. A few months ago a wonderful Christian man graded my long gravel driveway and added, at his own expense, truckloads of new gravel. The results were amazing and what took him only a short time would have taken me forever with shovel and wheelbarrow. I don’t expect to get a bill; not because I am not willing to pay but because My friend was doing it for the Lord.

Last night a small crew was busy decorating our fellowship hall for this week’s Mission Conference.  It is hard, hot and tedious work which requires talent. They were paid nothing for this. They are volunteers! These are only a few of the army of volunteers at our church. Without them we could not operate.

Perhaps you are feeling overworked and under-appreciated. Perhaps nobody knows that you do what you do. You receive little recognition for your hard work. If that is your thinking this morning then take heart. God is keeping good records and is even now preparing your reward.

God is such a good God that He not only will recognize you by-and-by but he blesses His volunteers day-by-day. Watch for His blessings today.

Begin at once; before you venture away from this quiet moment, ask your King to take you wholly into his service, and place all the hours of this day quite simply at his disposal, and ask him to make and keep you ready to do just exactly what he appoints. Never mind about tomorrow; one day at a time is enough. Try it today and see if it is not a day of strange, almost curious peace, so sweet that you will be only too thankful when tomorrow comes to ask him to take it also. Frances Ridley Havergal (1836-1879)

Dear Lord, when I feel discouraged and unappreciated, let me remember that you always reward your volunteers. AMEN

NO FOOLING!

NO FOOLING!

Ps 53:1
53 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.

1 Sam 25:3
3 Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb.

Interestingly, the original Old Testament word for “fool” is nabal which combines the two concepts of stupid and wicked. Abigail’s husband was named Nabal and he lived up to his name. He was “churlish” which indicates that he was hasty, not thoughtful, and excessive in his decisions and actions.

Abigail rushed out to meet David with provisions and when she arrived she had this to say about her hateful husband: “Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: 1 Sam 25:25.

To make a long story shorter, Nabal got drunk, had what seems to have been a heart attack, and died. Abigail became David’s wife. You really should read the story for yourself.

Stupid, wicked, hasty, thoughtless, and excessive thoughts and actions are the marks of the fool. The fool looks around at all of God’s creation and concludes that there is no God. Don’t be so foolish as to agree.

Lord, keep me from foolish thoughts and actions today. Let me be like Abigail who was a person of good understanding. AMEN
