SELF DISCIPLINE IS THE GOAL!

SELF DISCIPLINE IS THE GOAL!

Eph 4:11-15
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

          In order to leave our nursery and progress to the Pre-K class, one must be potty trained! Now, why would I lead off with that fact this morning? It is to point out that self discipline is the goal of discipline! All the efforts of the teacher are focused toward self-management which we sometimes call maturity.

          A year or so ago a little boy, squirming on the front pew, said to me: “I can tie my own shoes!” and proceeded to demonstrate by untying and tying both his shoes. One would have been evidence enough but he wanted there to be no doubt regarding his skills. He was a big boy now and was eager to progress to other challenges.

          Signs of spiritual maturity are not so cut and dried but generally one who is spiritually mature is able to read, accurately interpret and apply Scripture for himself. He is not carried about [Greek periphero] or transported hither and thither by anomalous winds of doctrine. His belief system and behavior are set. The training wheels are off the bike. He is self-disciplined. He can tie his own shoes.

          God’s gifts to the church are apostles, prophets, pastors and teachers. These, spiritually speaking, will tie our shoes and wipe our noses until we are able to do these things for ourselves, but self-management is always the goal. Do you have a Bible reading schedule and prayer time? Do petty offenses cause you to retreat from worship at church? Do you pout and demand your own way? Are you sure of what you believe and why you believe it? Pay respectful attention until you are able to tie your own shoes.

2 Tim 2:2
2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

Dear Lord, help me to be a fast learner and a patient teacher. AMEN

JUST A CUP OF COLD WATER!

JUST A CUP OF COLD WATER!

Matt 10:40-42
40 He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
41 He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.
42 And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

          Interestingly, the word “water” in the original does not appear! Literally it reads “a cup of cold.” The word for cold is psuchros and means “chilly.” We who can walk to our refrigerator and grab a handful of ice, and then go to the tap for water. think little of this verse. However, if you had no modern refrigeration a cup of cold might require a bit of planning and effort.

          One commentary has an interesting note regarding this cup of cold water. “But a cup of water in the eastern countries was not a matter of small worth. In India, the Hindus go sometimes a great way to fetch it, and then boil it that it may do the less hurt to travelers when they are hot; and, after that, they stand from morning to night in some great road, where there is neither pit nor rivulet, and offer it, in honour of their god, to be drunk by all passengers. This necessary work of charity, in these hot countries, seems to have been practiced by the more pious and humane Jews; and our Lord assures them that, if they do this in his name, they shall not lose their reward.” (from Adam Clarke's Commentary)

          Never forget that you are the King’s ambassador. If, while you are serving, you should simply offer a cup of cold water, you need to know that action will be recorded for a reward at a later time. Every act of obedient service, whether large or small, will be remembered and rewarded.

          It is easy to think that you are not accomplishing very much in the service of the Lord. We are sometimes tempted to quit. Other times we feel that the needs of others have simply sucked us dry and we have no more to give. Remember that the Savior records our deeds for later recognition.

Dear Lord, make me your water boy today. AMEN

WHAT IS THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT?

WHAT IS THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT?

Isa 9:6
6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

In his book, The Second Tree from the Corner, E. B. White makes this throbbing observation: “To perceive Christmas through its wrappings becomes more difficult with every year.”  This Christmas season is strange for me. The near completion of a year-long reconstruction of our church auditorium surely contributes to the difficulty of finding Christmas spirit. The problem seems to be in its definition. I will list a few contributing sources of what we sometimes refer to as the Christmas spirit.

1. IT IS THE SPIRIT OF ANTICIPATION!

          Those who practice a more liturgical form of worship, if they pay attention to it, may be better equipped to understand the spirit of anticipation. The season of Advent is a season of waiting, of anticipating. It is waiting and knowing. The Advent calendar, with its little daily door to be opened, marches confidently toward a known conclusion and not to an uncertain end. It is the spirit of anticipation.

Luke 2:25-26
25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.
26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

2. IT IS THE SPIRIT OF SURPRIZE!

          Christmas should be full of surprises. It is when the days become long and predictable that we tumble into bed without a feeling of triumph with weariness our only reward. It is the day full of surprises that ends with a deep sigh of satisfaction.

Luke 2:36-38
36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;
37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.
38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

          Simeon was fulfilled in his waiting – but Anna was joyfully surprised! The Christmas Story – the one in the Bible and not the movie on TV – is full of surprise words like “suddenly” and “immediately.” The Christmas spirit is the spirit of surprise.

3. IT IS THE SPIRIT OF WONDER!

Luke 2:8-10
8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

          The combination of the Greek words for “sore afraid” is actually “mega phobia.” It is the spirit of wonder and incredulity. It is Mary asking the angel “how can this thing be?” It is the speechless shepherds wide-eyed and doubtful of their own senses.

4. IT IS THE SPIRIT OF FAITH!

Heb 11:1
11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

          Substance and evidence! These fill the heart of the one full of unverified hope and unexplained joy. It is a gift of the Holy Spirit and a product of the holy written word. We need an apt benediction both for those with the Christmas spirit and for we who still seek it today.

Rom 15:13
13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

Dear Lord, fill us all with that joy and peace in believing today. Fill us with wonder. Surprise us with your presence. AMEN
