THE SIN OF BEING SELF-WILLED!

THE SIN OF BEING SELF-WILLED!

Titus 1:7

7 For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;

2 Peter 2:9-10

9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the Day of Judgment to be punished:

10 But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.

          F. B. Meyer said: “Man’s fall, whatever else it may have been, resulted in a complete change in the centre of his being. He was made in the likeness of God, and God’s nature is absolutely selfless.” Man and woman were naked in the garden without shame and the reason was that they were not “self-conscious” of their nakedness. In fact, one of the first questions asked of them was “who told you that you were naked?” They were not aware that their nakedness was a problem until the fall.

The conflict between Cain and Abel was a problem of self-centeredness. Cain, through the fall, had developed a pertinacious [holding firmly to an opinion or course of action; stubborn] focus upon himself. A self-willed person is spiritually and emotionally immature, if not dead. A newborn is totally focused upon himself. When he is hungry or wet, he cries loudly without regard to the comfort or convenience of anyone else. Later he develops an awareness of mother and then of others. As he matures, he learns to be courteous. Too many have failed to develop courtesy as a sign of maturity. They are self-willed.

Stubbornly and arrogantly insisting on one’s own way is specifically forbidden in bishops or pastors. How can one devote his life to the service of God and others while the center of his focus is himself? Every character flaw listed in Titus 1:7 is a result of self-will. The anger, the brawling, the drunkenness, and the love of money are all a result of a wrong focus. “Self-willed” is translated from the Greek authades which means “self-pleasing, arrogant and overbearing.” The man of God can’t be guilty of this.

Perhaps an illustration is needed to open a window to our understanding. A cold wind was howling, and a chilling rain was beating down when the telephone rang in the home of a doctor. The caller said that his wife needed urgent medical attention. The doctor was understanding. "I'll be glad to come, but my car is being repaired," he said. "Could you come and get me?" There was indignation at the other end of the phone as an angry voice sputtered, "What, in this weather?"

Matt 16:24

24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, [say no to his wishes and comforts] and take up his cross, and follow me.

Dear Lord, please change the focus of my heart. Help me to think first of you and then of others. AMEN

WHY OUR CULTURE IS DECLINING!

WHY OUR CULTURE IS DECLINING!

James 1:18-25

18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

KJV

James 1:21

21 So get rid of all uncleanness and the rampant outgrowth of wickedness, and in a humble (gentle, modest) spirit receive and welcome the Word which implanted and rooted [in your hearts] contains the power to save your souls.

AMPLIFIED

We are born again by the power of the Word of Truth. This is an obvious reference to the Bible and an explanation of the battle that rages for an authoritative text. Why are there so many versions and translations? On the one hand there is a sincere desire to understand what God wanted to communicate to man. On the other hand, there is an unconscious desire to remanufacture the Word to lower God’s standards to match my behavior. I will never hold to or teach a standard higher than my own behavior! I think therein is a cycle of decline.

When my behavior begins to decline it first begins with my ignoring or abandoning the clear teaching of the Word of God. Perhaps I misunderstand it or, possibly, I decide it does not apply to me! The result is that I have become a transgressor – a rule breaker. As a transgressor, I have broken the peaceful relationship between me and the Lawgiver. I am culpable – guilty. I am unwilling to remain in this guilt for long.

At this point repentance should be the action taken but, if I am unwilling to abandon my sin, I still try to reconcile with the rules. I begin to change the rules! If I sin, then I redefine the portion of the Bible that speaks to that topic. I make the rules more agreeable to my sin. Gradually the Bible begins to be reshaped to agree with my behavior. My sin becomes less sinful to me, and the Bible soon becomes a patchwork of my own desires.

If I am a teacher, then my teaching begins to reflect the changes in my behavior. If I am no longer comfortable teaching that my behavior is wrong, instead of changing my behavior I change my teaching. I make the Word of God to confirm my practices. All my followers will rise no higher in their devotion and obedience than my highest behavior. I have become the new law unto them. I have become a false teacher! Slowly an entire culture is transformed!

So, how can we turn this ship around? We will not recover until we rediscover and return to the authority of Scriptures. I must no longer practice my faith based on my feelings and opinions. During the reconstruction of Jerusalem under Nehemiah, a copy of the Scriptures was found. It is a lengthy portion, but it is germane to our topic.

Neh 8:1-4

8:1 And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water gate; and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded to Israel.

2 And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month.

3 And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.

4 And Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose…

8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.

If we are to reclaim our culture, we must return to the understanding and practice of Biblical teaching. Whenever my behavior and my Bible disagree, I must revise my practice and not the text.

Jer 15:16

16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.

Dear Lord, as I view myself in the mirror of Your Word, let me yield to its truth and make changes in my life. Let me not be a forgetful hearer but one who practices the truths within. AMEN

PURSUE HOLINESS!

PURSUE HOLINESS!

Heb 12:14-17

14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.

17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.

The word holiness is from two Greek words, ho hagiosmos. The first little word is a definite article and is equivalent to our word “the.” The other word is literally “purifier.” Once we learn the meaning of the words, we can read it this way: follow the purifier. Now I see that I am not being commanded to produce holiness but to follow the one who is able to make me holy.

A holy life is no accident. We do not carelessly or casually stumble upon holiness. We pursue it as a goal! Following peace with all men, and holiness, is intentional. This means that we make the pursuit of holiness a conscious aspiration. It requires diligence to run the race successfully lest we "fail of the grace of God" (Heb 12:15). God's grace does not fail, but we can fail to take advantage of His grace.

Esau certainly failed to act on God's grace. The account is given in Gen 25:27-34; 27:30-45. Esau was "a profane person," which means "a common person, one who lives for the world and not God." (Our English word, profane, literally means "outside the temple," or not belonging to God.) Esau despised his birthright and sold it to Jacob, and he missed the blessing because it was given to Jacob. Afterward, Esau tried to get Isaac to change his mind, but it was too late. Even Esau's tears availed nothing. (Warren Wiersbe)

The lives of individual Christians, even the worship of modern churches, have become more common than holy. Common pursuits give rise to common themes and produce only common results. Because personal holiness is a product of gradual development, the Bible is always encouraging us to be holy.

Eph 4:22-24

22 … put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

I Lay My Sins On Jesus

I lay my sins on Jesus, the spotless Lamb of God;
He bears them all, and frees us from the accursed load;
I bring my guilt to Jesus, to wash my crimson stains
White in His blood most precious, till not a stain remains.

Holy God, I am not holy! Please make me so by Thy grace. AMEN

MOVED WITH COMPASSON!

MOVED WITH COMPASSON!

Matt 14:14

14 And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.

Five times in the New Testament it is recorded that Jesus was “moved with compassion.” Matthew mentions three occasions and Mark points out two. The Greek word that requires an English phrase to translate is the word splagchnizomai and means “to have the bowels yearn” or to feel sympathy or pity. Certainly, we have all felt that knot in our belly that is somehow connected to strong emotions!

Jesus was able to see a person’s need and pain. It is amazing that he was not constantly weeping! He saw the multitude without direction or care. He saw the sick in need of healing. He saw the unpaid debt that needed to be forgiven and the leper that needed to be cleansed. He noticed it all and his “bowels” turned over and over in sympathy.

Several times Jesus asked His disciples to partner with him in relieving suffering. Once He told them to give the multitude something to eat. Yet another time He asked them to pray that laborers would be provided. What can we do when our sympathies overwhelm our resources?

There was never a situation that Jesus did not respond to with prayer no matter how large or small the problem. When he missed the fellowship of the Father and the comfort of heaven he prayed. When he was hungry and tired, he prayed. If he was tempted, he prayed. When criticized he prayed. When hanging on the cross he prayed. There was never an emergency that would not yield to prayer.

Dear Lord, I run to you this morning with a long list of needs and concerns. I am doing what you did when overwhelmed. Lord, please meet the needs of my friends today. AMEN

UNWORTHY

Luke 15:18-24

18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,

19 And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.

20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

21 And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.

22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:

23 And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:

24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.

The prodigal had taken his inheritance and squandered it on cheap liquor, fast women, and false friends. His proper self-evaluation was that he was unworthy of his father’s love and blessings. It was a correct evaluation.

The word “worthy” is from the Greek axios (ax’-ee-os) deserving or suitable. The prodigal had disqualified himself from due reward. His brother, perhaps fearing he would now squander what was left, eagerly agreed. He was not worthy to return home. Yet the father saw through the eyes of love.

Charles Spurgeon, commenting on John 21:12 says: “In these words the believer is invited to a holy nearness to Jesus. "Come and dine," implies the same table, the same meat; ay, and sometimes it means to sit side by side, and lean our head upon the Saviour's bosom.”

Dear Lord, I know that I am unworthy of the least of Thy blessings, yet you have made me worthy. I will, therefore, come and worship. AMEN

TARES AMONG THE WHEAT!

Thursday, October 10, 2024

TARES AMONG THE WHEAT!

Matt 13:24-25

24 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:

25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.

The parable of the tares is found in Matthew 13:25-40. The wheat represents true believers, and the tares represents pretenders. It is most difficult to tell them apart. Their appearance is very similar, but the proof is in the eating.

Dr. Albert Barnes explains: By "tares" is probably meant a degenerate kind of wheat, or the darnel-grass growing in Palestine. In its growth and form it has a strong resemblance to genuine wheat; but it either produces no grain, or that of a very inferior and hurtful kind. Probably it comes near to what we mean by "chess." It was extremely difficult to separate it from the genuine wheat, on account of its similarity while growing.

The "taste" is bitter, and when eaten separately, or even when diffused in ordinary bread, it causes dizziness, and often acts as a violent emetic. Barn-door fowls also become dizzy from eating it. In short, it is a strong soporific (a sedative)  poison, and must be carefully winnowed, and picked out of the wheat grain by grain, before grinding, or the flour is not healthy.

Grain by grain! That’s how it is with our daily lives, isn’t it? We sow good things into our mind, heart, and lives but later we find things that are bitter and sickening. Where did those things come from? The enemy has sowed tares among our wheat.

Sift your life and carefully pluck away those things that are bitter. Better yet, ask God to sift your life and purify it.

Luke 22:31-32

31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:

32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

Dear Lord, within the good wheat of my life grows tares. Despite my best efforts, I find within me things that must make you sick. Pluck them from me grain by grain. Purify me, I pray. AMEN

NOT OF THIS WORLD!

NOT OF THIS WORLD!

John 15:17-19

17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.

18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

Christianity began as an insignificant baker’s dozen plodding the streets of Jerusalem. As far as the world was concerned, this little band was hardly worth a second glance. Their leader was a poor carpenter of questionable birth who had a strange personal magnetism. He attracted a handful of societal misfits who wandered the streets and generally made themselves a nuisance. The world hated them. Their leader was eventually crucified, one follower committed suicide, and one-by-one the rest were dispatched in order.

The spread of Christianity can only be described as “otherworldly.” Its growth doesn’t make much sense and what was once an obscure cult is now a worldwide force. But the bonding of Christianity and American culture is an uncomfortable alliance where both sides question whether it is appropriate to be part of the other. As long as Christianity doesn’t demand culture to radically change the alliance is friendly, but when Christianity proves itself to be truly Christian the relationship is strained. The world still hates us!  John Gambold said: "The laws of Christ condemn a vicious world, and goad it to revenge!"

Settle it in your heart that the world will continue to resist true Christianity. You will constantly be required to choose between pleasing the world or pleasing God. You will never find a comfortable middle ground. Stop trying to compromise with the culture because the world can offer you nothing beyond this life. Only Jesus can do that.

John 16:33

33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Dear Lord, the world is a disappointing place because I am not from here. I don’t belong here, and I’m not staying here! The discomfort that I feel is due to my being displaced from my true home. Come quickly and take me to be with you. AMEN

THE FLIP SIDE OF CONFUSION!

THE FLIP SIDE OF CONFUSION!

1 Cor 14:33

33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

James 3:16

16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

Our English word “confusion” is translated from some eight or nine original Hebrew and Greek words. We don’t have space or time for an exhaustive study of each one. We will look at two examples.

In both verses above, the Greek word for “confusion” is akatastasia and it means “instability and disorder.” In Corinthians, Paul is addressing the instability and disorder of the unrestrained use of certain sign gifts, the most popular of which was, and still is, the use of unlearned languages as the means of revelation. Use of tongues evidently made one popular among the believers and, human nature being what it is, some were, and still are, “faking it.” The result was confusion and disorder. Paul simply said that God did not and does not “author” or authorize this.

James is plain spoken in all his teachings and explains that confusion is produced by envy and strife. Whenever we compete with God and other believers for prominence and popularity there is disorder and confusion.

The flip side of confusion is not only clarity but peace! Peace with one another takes place when we stop pushing and shoving for popularity and privilege. Peace with God comes only from surrender since we have no hope in victory over God. Fighting with God is like slapping a cactus.

Stop for a moment! What is driving the confusion in your life? Are you in competition with other humans? The answer is order and humility. Are you in a battle with God? Such a battle cannot end well unless you surrender.

Dear Lord, let me put away envy and strife. Let me not envy my brothers and sisters or strive with you. Replace my confusion with peace today. AMEN

HOW GOD SPEAKS

HOW GOD SPEAKS

Heb 1:1-2

1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; [KJV]

Heb 1:1

1 In many parts, and many ways, God of old having spoken to the fathers in the prophets, [Young’s Literal Translation]

English, being a rather complex language, often uses more words than the original Greek composition. In fact the first verse reads “times and manners.” Times is trnslated from the Greek polumeros and manners from the Greek polutropos. We understand those two words by the addition of English words to form “at irregular times and in various ways.”

Now, in the times near the end, God speaks to us by His Son and, usually through the written Word. John wrote, “ In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1 John goes on the explain that the Word was and still is the Son of God.

Many are they who claim a special revelation by saying “God told me,” or “I had a vision,” claim something that the writer of Hebrews says has past. This is the manner that God used “in times past.” But now, in these last days, God speaks through His Son, Jesus, the written Word. I reckon seers may see but readers surely can read and the one seems much more believable. I seem to recall that the veil of the Temple was torn in two from top to bottom. Man did not rip it. God did.

Lord, help me to maintain a healthy respect for the authoratative Word. Let me not shun reading it, studying it, and meditating on it for therin we find the words of life. AMEN
