ATTITUDE SMOOTHES THE WAY!

Prov 14:6

6 A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: but knowledge is easy unto him that understandeth.

The Hebrew meaning attached to the word “scorner” means “to make a mouth at.” The idea is to purse the lips or to mock. It is a facial response to an internal attitude. That attitude is pride. It comes from the person who overvalues himself and discounts the price of others. He or she is always anxious to gain honor and favor and will do almost anything to receive it. These eagerly receive honors they have not earned and display trophies which have no real meaning.

The scorner despises the counsel of God. He seeks wisdom, so that he may boast of having it, but he never finds it because he is searching in the wrong places and for the wrong reasons. He shuns the Scriptures and ignores the prodding of the Holy Spirit. His own attitude has completely blocked his ability to receive wisdom. Knowledge is “easy” to him who has a teachable spirit and to him who seeks it with his whole heart.

Jer 29:13

13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

Someone has said “there is no quality that sticks more closely to a scorner than pride, and nothing more evidently obstructs right reasoning.” Simply put, a man who knows everything can be taught nothing!

Ps 32:8-9

8 I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.

9 Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee. [Follow willingly. Do not make me pull you along.]

Dear Lord, forgive me of my pride and make me pliable and teachable. Guide me today with your eyes. Help me to see as you see. Keep your eye on me and keep me from foolishness. AMEN

THREE SPIRITS DAVID PRAYED FOR!

THREE SPIRITS DAVID PRAYED FOR!

Ps 51:10

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

Ps 51:12

12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

Ps 51:17

17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

After King David’s tragic affair with Bathsheba, he cries out to God for a spirit characterized by these three things.

1. A RIGHT SPIRIT!

The word “right” properly means to be erect or to stand perpendicular and indicates steadfastness. It was a failure of steadfastness that had brought David to this place.

2. A FREE SPIRIT!

The word “free” properly means “voluntary” or “to be willing.” Isn’t that what we all need this morning? Don’t we need to be willing to say yes to God? When David said “uphold me” he is asking God to sustain him in a way in which he had just recently failed. He did not want to be stubborn or contrary. When God speaks a command, David wanted to be willing.

3. A BROKEN SPIRIT!

Brokenness releases the sweet perfume of submission and sacrifice. When our stiff and unyielding spirit bursts there is produced a relationship of openness that is not possible between God and an obstinate person. I want my spirit to understand that God’s ways are right. I want to feel it emotionally and not just to know it intellectually.

Dear Lord, slay my ungodly self – soften my impenetrable hardness – bring low my haughty pride. AMEN

WEARING DOWN!

WEARING DOWN!

Dan 7:24-25

24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.

25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

Rev 6:9-10

9 And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:

10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?

In the midst of his prophecy, Daniel describes the “wearing down” of the saints. The Hebrew word means “to afflict.” If you will pause for a moment for a self-check, you might notice a few ragged edges around your soul.

Lately I have been in an unacceptable mood. I am trying to learn to keep my mouth shut when this happens but often people will notice my silence and try to draw me out. The simple truth is that I don’t specifically know what the problem is. It’s just everything! Wickedness in the political world, pressure from the marketplace with prices skyrocketing, disillusionment with others and disappointment with myself. It’s just everything more than anything! Believers will find this world to be a progressively unfriendly place because our citizenship is in heaven (Hebrews 13:14).

Gal 6:17

17 From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.

Paul ended his epistle to the Galatians with an appeal to simply be left alone. The Greek word which is translated “trouble” actually means “to cut.” Paul had been worn down. Adam Clarke puts it this way: “Let me be grieved no longer with your defections from the truth.” What do we do when we feel the “cut” of a world that rejects our God and us in the bargain? We flee to the Rock!

Ps 61:2

2 From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

Sometimes I feel discouraged
And I think my works in vain
I'm tempted oft(en) to murmur
To grumble and complain
Ohh...but then I think of Jesus
And all he's done for me
Then I cry
Ohh...rock of ages
Hide thou me.

Dear Lord, be my Rock today. AMEN
