DIRTY HANDS OR DIRTY HEARTS?

DIRTY HANDS OR DIRTY HEARTS?

Mark 7:14-23

14 And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand:

15 There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.

16 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.

17 And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable.

18 And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;

19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?

20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.

21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

The last words recorded in chapter six were: “as many as touched him were made whole!”  Chapter seven begins by explaining that the Pharisees were following Jesus and his disciples and had observed them eating with unwashed hands. Now, as a kid, Mom would tell me to wash up for dinner. We had been outside playing and it was uncertain what vile thing we had picked up to play with. Dirt was the common playground and Mom did not want us to eat with dirty hands because we might become sick. The Pharisees, however, took hand washing to a different level as can be seen in the first five verses of chapter seven.

Jesus turned things around and explained to the Pharisees that whatever the body took in it also passed out. The cleansing system of the human body could easily dispose of most of what went in. However, the Pharisees had dirty hearts. This the body could not cleanse. Out of the heart proceeded evil thoughts and the actions that those thoughts prompted. Verses 21 and 22 provide a long list of dirty things that come from within. The Pharisees had clean hands but dirty hearts.

James 4:7-8

7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

Dear Lord, wash my heart of all the things that would defile me. Let my heart be completely dedicated to you. AMEN

HE CARES FOR YOU!

Luke 15:4

4 What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?

1 Peter 5:7

7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Many years ago, I talked to an insurance salesman who told me that he had to constantly sell more and more policies to offset attrition. Attrition is that gradual wearing away of his clientele. I thought it was somewhat cold because I am also concerned with retention! If you are dealing with souls instead of customers, it becomes critically important!

When Jesus asked, “what man of you,” he was pointing out that some shepherds might simply count his ninety-nine sheep and be grateful. However, Jesus could not be satisfied until that one lost sheep was found and returned.

Peter reminds us that God cares for us. The idea is that God always has His eye on us! Sheep tend to go astray, and that is why they need a shepherd! Earlier, Peter reminded us of this very thing. For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.” 1 Peter 2:25.

To us who stray and enjoy our wandering, this is aggravating because we don’t want a constantly watching eye, but for those of us who are lost and feel our lostness, we are grateful.

Ps 38:21-22

21 Forsake me not, O Lord: O my God, be not far from me.

22 Make haste to help me, O Lord my salvation.

Lord, I am a shepherd and I feel the emptiness of lost sheep. I see them, although they do not know it. Help me to rescue them. Lord, I also am a sheep and have my own wandering ways. Never take your eyes off me. AMEN

A HOLE IN MY EAR

Ex 21:1-6

21 Now these are the judgments which thou shalt set before them.

2 If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.

3 If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him.

4 If his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself.

5 And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free:

6 Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him for ever. KJV

Only twice does the phrase “door post” appear in the KJV and both are in the book of Exodus. The first is a reference to Passover and this second appears in the “rules” regarding indentured slaves. The Jews knew very well how to be slaves in Egypt, but they needed rules for freedom.

Our text lists rules for the release of slaves who had finished their responsibilities of servanthood. After six years, they could go free, but they could not take anything or anyone with them. This cruelly included wives and children. Verse five is our focal point this morning. “And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free.”

I clearly see a strong relationship between LOVE and SERVICE. I hope you can see that too. Yesterday, my wife had surgery and today we are recovering at home. Because I love my wife, if she says, “Honey, can you …” immediately I am up and ready to do whatever the rest of the sentence demands.

This same love relationship controls our willingness to serve our Lord. Grace has made me free, but love has made me a servant forever.

Dear Lord, I place my ear against your door post. Drill the hole and insert the ring that identifies me as a willing servant. AMEN
